University Observatory
Hon. Director : Dr. V K Vaidyan
0471- 2322732(O); 2445286(R)

The University Observatory which functions as part of the Department of Physics, commenced its operation  in 1837. The Observatory is one of the oldest of its kind in modern India and it owes its origin to the initiative and vision of Sri. Swathi Tirunal, the Maharaja of erstwhile state of Travancore.

The establishment of the Observatory was the result of discussions of Sri. Swathi Tirunal and Mr. Caldecott, the commercial agent to Travancore Government at Alleppey who used to make astronomical observations with his own portable instruments. Mr. Caldecott was the first Director of the Observatory. During 1840, the Observatory obtained the necessary equipments and made significant contributions during 1852-1865 when Mr. John Allan Brown, FRS was its Director.

The pioneering work on the relation between surface geo-magnetic field variations and features on the solar surface made by Allan Brown is considered very important even today on Solar-Terrestrial Physics. The Observatory was again reorganised in 1892 by Dr. A.C. Mitchell, who took charge as the Hon. Director. Among the other Honorary Directors were Dr. K.R. Ramanathan who later became the Director of Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, arranged systematic study of a large number of meteorological elements.

The Observatory captured the attention of the scientific world during 1941 when the new comet (1941-C) was sighted by Dr. H. Subramony Iyer on 23 January, 1941. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai had his cosmic ray experiment at the University Observatory. In the centenary year of the Observatory, the University of Travancore was established. On August 17, 1939 the Observatory was transfered to the control of the University and it functioned as a unit of the Central Institute of Research. In 195 I, the meteorology section of the Observatory was taken over by Government of  India and Astronomical section by the State Government. On January 1, 1976 the Government of Kerala decided to transfer the Observatory back to the control of the University.

The world-wide enthusiasm over the arrival of Halley's comet, the transit of planet Mercury across the solar disk etc. gave a boost to the activities of the Observatory. The Observatory has been transformed into
one of the leading research centres of the University with modern facilities. Many Ph.D., M.Phil and M.Sc. Students could make use of the Observatory facilities to work on Astronomy and related areas. The University has signed a MOU with the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) for the development of basic facilities at the Observatory and to develop research activities in this area.

The
Department of Electronics has made the Observatory as the ERNET node for electronically linking the research institutions around Thiruvananthapuram to national and international centres. With the present modern facilities like 11 inch telescope, CCD camera, Sun workstations, image processing facility and collaboration with national programmes, the Observatory will grow as one of the important centres in astronomy and related fields of our country.

The University of Kerala has established ten Centres for Teacher Education to offer B.Ed. course under its direct control and supervision. The Centres were formed as part of the policy of the University to raise the standards of education and to accommodate the large number of qualified candidates who seek admission to B.Ed. courses. Most of these candidates had ealier been compelled to seek admission in B.Ed colleges of other states. The Centres of Teacher Education have been a real relief to such students who were forced to pay hefty amounts as fees in other States.

The Centres are located at Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Adoor, Alappuzha, Olathanni, Thamarakulam, Kulakkada, Kayamkulam, Anchal and Kazhakkuttom. The Government and Local bodies have extended all help to the University in running these Centres. The centres offer a wide variety of subjects of study.

University Institute of Technology
Hon. Director: Dr. C. Ganesh
0471- 2306422 (Extn. 302)(O); 0471-2416470 (R)

The University Institute of Technology was started in 1995 with the objective of imparting training to students for employment in R&D institutions, business organisations, industries and for self-employment. The UIT functions from the University buildings in the Senate House campus and has seven centres located at Adoor, Alappuzha, Neyyattinkara, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanapuram, Pirappancode and Kollam. All the centres (except Pirappancode) offer B.Sc. (Computer Science) and BBA courses while the Thiruvananthapuram centre, offers B.Sc. (Electronics) also. All these courses are designed for three year, six semester, single main, bachelor degree courses. All centres admit 60 students each for B.Sc. Computer Science. The Thiruvananthapuram centre admits 60 students for BBA and 40 students for B.Sc. Electronics. Placement service on a modest scale has been arranged here.

The UIT centres at Kollam and Alappuzha are functioning in government school buildings. In the case of these centres, the local MPs have donated Rs. 10 lakhs each for construction of buildings. The UlT centre at Adoor is housed in a new building on the side of MC Road with an area of over 8,000 square feet. The UIT, Thiruvananthapuram centre is functioning at the PTP Government School at Kuravankonam.

The foray of the University into self-financing courses has been a recent phenomenon. The success of this experiment has emboldened the University to broaden the activities of the UIT. Several new courses like MCA, B.Sc. (IT) and PGDCA are planned to be launched shortly. There are also strong demands to start new UIT centres in hitherto unrepresented areas. Several Grama Panchayats have already come forward with offers of land and building for starting the centre. The University is also planning a permanent building for UIT at the Kariavattom campus.

The University Health Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, set up in 1962, has two basic objectives, viz. provision of comprehensive and modem health care to students of the Kerala University and dissemination of health education and sufficient practical information with a veiw to generating in them keen health consciousness.

The Centre has launched a number of health awareness programmes and is planning to bring under the coverage of these programmes, the entire student population of Kerala University. While most of these programmes are conducted in the colleges some are conducted at the Centre. The various health education programmes are regularly organised with the aid of talks, discussions, seminars, training sessions etc. The topics for the programmes cover potential hazards of tobacco, alcoholism and drug addiction, mental health care, challenges of marital life, blood donation etc.

The University Health Centre is located in the Kerala University Office premises. The Health Information Officer of the Centre is in charge of organising and conducting the various health awareness programmes undertaken by the Centre.Consulting services are provided in colleges for the needy students. Consulting service was arranged with the help of clinical psychologists in NSS College for Women, Neeramankara in Sept. 99 for 13 students having problems connected with family, learning, love affair etc. Surveys/studies are conducted on problems connected with University students. The studies on frustration among University youth, suicidal tendencies among female students etc were conducted by the University Health Centre recently and the reports were published.
