GUIDELINES FOR ADMISSION OF FOREIGN STUDENTS IN THE DEPARTMENTS / COLLEGES AFFILIATED UNDER THE UNIVERSITY OF KERALA

General Eligibility Conditions

According to the rules and regulations of the University of Kerala, you are eligible for admission to a course/ research (in any affiliated college under the University or any of the University Department of Study & Research) only if you have passed the qualifying examination or any other examination, recognised by this University as equivalent to it, with a minimum of 55% marks. Relaxation of marks will be allowed to SC/ST students.

Even if you have passed the qualifying course you must also have attained the minimum age prescribed for admission to the course. Apart from this at the time of admission you are required to present your transfer certificate (T.C) and a conduct certificate from the institution you have last studied. If your are an over aged private S.S.L.C holder then you are exempted from the producing the Transfer Certificate at the time of admission in the affiliated colleges and also for Private Registrations.

If you had studied in an institution outside the territorial jurisdiction of this University and presently you wish to seek admission to a College/Institution or any of the University’s Departments of Study and Research in this University, in addition to the above said requirements you should also produce a Migration Certificate. You shall also produce an Eligibility Certificate that can be had from the Registrar by submitting an application form with a prescribed fee.

Candidates who migrate from other Universities should register as matriculates of this University at the time of admission by paying the prescribed fee.

If one fails to produce the Migration Certificate as requested by the University of Kerala, then he/she will not be allowed to take any examination of this University.

Admission to colleges or other institutions under the University will not be permitted after two months from the date of reopening of the college or University Department concerned, except with the previous permission of this University. However, he/she may be permitted to join the following part-time courses conducted by the University or by a college affiliated to this University or by a Center for study and research of this University.

No Candidate who has passed an examination from this University or from any other University shall be permitted to take an examination of this University or to join the course leading to that Examination or part or parts thereof which is considered lower than the one he has passed.

RECOGNITION OF EXAMINATION & DEGREEE OF OTHER UNIVERSITIES

Candidates who seek admission to the University on the basis of
having passed an Examination of another University or Authority accepted as equivalent to the Qualifying Examination of this University shall apply to the Controller of Examinations through the Principal or Head of the Institution or University Departments of Study and Research (directly, in the case of Private Registration candidates) in the prescribed form with the prescribed fee, for individual recognition of the Examination passed by the candidate.

Candidates who seek admission to the University, on the basis of having passed an Examination of another University or Authority accepted as equivalent to the Qualifying Examination for a prescribed Course of Study or Registration for Research or an Examination, may apply to the Registrar in the prescribed form furnishing information as to their eligibility and the Registrar shall issue to the candidate concerned an Eligibility Certificate specifying the equivalence/recognition granted to the said Examination by the Academic Council.

Procedure for applying for General Recognition
(1) The request for recognition of Examinations, Degrees, etc. of other Universities or Authorities shall be addressed to the Registrar with prescribed fee.
(2) It shall be accompanied by certified copies of the Scheme and Syllabus, Regulations and Rules for the award of Class/Grade, in respect of the particular Examination (s)
Provided that it shall further be accompanied by certified true copies of the Mark lists and Certificates of the said examination(s) passed, when the request for recognition is made by a person other than the Universities or authorities concerned.

In the case of candidates who are just undergoing the Course but not completed, the request for recognition shall be accompanied by the Original Scheme/Syllabus, Rules and Regulations, duration of the course etc. and forwarded through the University in which the candidates is undergoing the Course.

Minimum Requirements for Admission of...
DEGREE COURSES

No candidate shall be admitted to the following courses of studies unless he/she has required the minimum qualification prescribed here under:-

(1) B.A.Degree Course: (Under the Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Oriental Studies and Fine Arts) Pass in the Pre-Degree examination of this University, 10+2 or an examination accepted by the Academic Council as equivalent thereto.

(2) B.Sc Degree Course: Pass in the Pre-Degree examination of this University, 10+2 or an examination accepted by the Academic Council as equivalent thereto with the main subject they propose to offer for the B.Sc. Course as one of the subjects.
Candidates for the B.Sc. (Home Science) Degree Course shall be required to have passed the Pre-Degree Examination of this University or an Examination accepted by the Academic Council as equivalent thereto, with essentials of Home Science or Physics or Chemistry as one of the main subjects.

(3) B.Com. Degree Course:- Pass in the Pre-Degree Examination of this University or an examination accepted by the Academic Council as equivalent thereto with Accountancy and any two of the following subjects: viz.(I) Commerce (ii) Commercial Geography (iii) Economics (iv) Life Insurance with Salesmanship (v) Banking and Secretarial Practice (vi) Business Communication and (vii) Office management, as optional subjects or pass in the Pre-Degree or equivalent examination with other optional subjects securing not less than 45% of the aggregate marks.

(4) B.P.E Degree Course: Pass in the Pre-Degree examination of this University or an examination accepted by the Academic Council as equivalent thereto or a pass in the S.S.L.C. or equivalent examination with a certificate in Physical Education of at least two year's duration from a recognised institution of Physical Education.

(5) B.L.I.Sc.Degree Course: (Library and Information Science) Graduation in any faculty, with an aggregate minimum of 50% marks.

MA Degree Courses

(1) MA English Language & Literature: B.A with English as optional main subject securing not less than 45% marks in part III or graduation in any subject in the Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science, with not less than three papers under Part I compulsory English securing not less than 50% marks in (Part I).
(2) MA Philosophy: Graduation in any subject in the Faculties of Arts, Social Science, Oriental Studies, Fine Arts or Science securing not less than 45% marks in Part III optional Subjects (including subsidiaries).
(3) MA Politics: Graduation in Politics, History Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Law, Journalism, Commerce, Business Administration, Public Administration, Geography or other subjects under Social Sciences securing not less than 45% marks in Part III optional subjects. Graduates in science and engineering with 60% marks are also eligible. Proportion of science and engineering graduates shall not exceed 10% of total seats.
(4) MA Economics: Graduation in Economics, Mathematics or Statistics with not less than 45% in Part III- optional subjects (including subsidiaries).

(5) MA History: Graduation in any subject in the Faculty of Social Sciences or graduation in the faculty of Arts with English Language and Literature as the main subject, securing not less than 45% in Part III optional subjects (including subsidiaries).

 

(6) MA Psychology: Graduation in Psychology with not less than 45% marks in Part III Optional Subjects (including subsidiaries).
(7) MA Sociology: Graduation in any subject in the faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce and Law (Psychology, Anthropology, Economics, Politics, History, Philosophy or Criminology) securing not less than 45% marks in part III optional subjects (including subsidiaries).
(8) (a) MA Sanskrit: B.A Sanskrit as Optional Main subject under Part III securing not less than 45% marks for that part or B.A/B. Sc with Sanskrit as Additional Language under Part II securing not less than 50% marks for that part.
(b) Sanskrit (Special): Graduate in Sanskrit (Special) securing not less than 45% of the aggregate marks under Part III optional subjects or Graduates in Sanskrit.
(c) Special Jyothisha (as above)
(9) M.A.Malayalam: BA With Malayalam as Optional Main subject under Part III securing not less than 45% marks for that part or B.A/B.Sc. with Malayalam as Additional language under Part II securing not less than 50% marks for that part. A weightage of 10% will be given to those who have taken Malayalam as their optional subject at the graduate level.
(10) M.A.Hindi: B.A with Hindi as Optional Main Subject under Part III securing not less than 45% marks for that part or B.A/B.Sc. with Hindi as Additional Language under Part II Securing not less than 50% marks for that part.
(11) M.A.Tamil: B.A with Tamil as Optional Main subject under Par III securing not less than 45% marks for that part or BA/B.Sc.. With Tamil as Additional Language under Part II Securing not less than 50% marks for that part.
(12) M.A. Arabic: BA with Arabic as Optional Main or Subsidiary subject under Part III securing not less than 45% marks for that part or BA/B.Sc. with Arabic as Additional Language under Part III securing not less than 50% marks for that Part or B.A/B.Sc. with a pass in Afzal-Ul-ema (Oriental Title) examination of the Kerala or Calicut University or Arabic Munshi Examination of the Kerala Government or Arabic Munshi (Lower or Higher) of the erstwhile Travancore-Cochin Government.
(13) (a) M.A. Linguistics: Graduation in any subject in the Faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, and Oriental Studies with not less than 45% marks in Part III - optional subjects.
(b) Applied Linguistics: (as above).
(14) M.A. Russian Language & Literature: Graduation in any subject in the Faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science and Oriental studies with Russian as Additional Language under Part II of the Degree Examination securing not less than 50% marks for that part or a pass in the Diploma Examination in Russian of this University or an examination accepted by the Academic Council as equivalent thereto.
(15) MA German Language & Literature: Graduation in any subject in the Faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science and Oriental Studies with German as additional language under Part II of the degree examination securing not less than 50% marks for that part or minimum of 50% marks in the Advanced Diploma Examination in German of this University or an examination accepted by the Academic Council as equivalent thereto. Students of BA English or BA History with German as sub-paper and having minimum 50% marks.
(16) MA Music: B.A with Music as optional main subject under Part III securing not less than 45% for that part.
(17) Islamic History: Graduate in Islamic History or in any subject in the Faculties of Social Sciences or graduates in Arabic, securing not less than 45% of the aggregate marks under part III optional subjects. The latter two categories will be considered if there are vacancies over and above the number of applicants who have taken their BA in Islamic History. (A weightage of 40% marks may be given to graduates in Islamic History).

Please Note: The stipulation relating to minimum marks shall not be applicable in the cases of those who appear privately or through correspondence course study.

Candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/ Schedules Tribes (SC/ST) need secure not less than 35% of the aggregate marks for admission to MA degree course.

A relaxation of 2% marks from the prescribed minimum shall be allowed to candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

M.Sc. DEGREE COURSES
(i) M.Sc. Mathematics: B.Sc. with Mathematics or Statistics as optional main subject under Part III securing not less that 55% marks for that part.
(ii) M.Sc. Physics: B.Sc with Physics as optional main subject and Mathematics as one of the subsidiary subjects under part III securing not less than 55% marks for that part.
(iii) M.Sc. Chemistry: B.Sc with Chemistry as Optional Main Subject and Mathematics as one of the Subsidiary subjects under Part III securing not less that 55% marks for that part.
(Iv) M.Sc. Biochemistry: B.Sc with Biochemistry or Chemistry as Optional Main Subject, any two of the following as subsidiary subjects: (I) Mathematics (ii) Physics (iii) Botany and (iv) Zoology under Part III securing not less than 55% marks for that part.
(v) M.Sc. Botany/Genetics and Plant Breeding: B.Sc with Botany as Optional Main subject under Part III securing not less than 55% marks for that part.

(vi) M.Sc. Zoology: B.Sc with Zoology as Optional Main Subject under Part III securing not less than 55% marks for that part, Aquatic Biology & Fisheries (as above)

(vii) M.Sc. Statistics: B.Sc with Statistics or Mathematics as optional main subject under Part III securing not less that 55% marks for that Part.

(viii) M.Sc. Geology: B.Sc with Geology as optional main subject under Part III securing not less than 55% marks for that Part.
(ix) M.Sc. Demography: B.Sc. with Mathematics or Statistics as optional main subject under Part III - securing not less that 55% marks for that part.
(x) M.Sc. Home Science: B.Sc with Home Science as Optional Main Subject under Part III securing not less than 55% marks for that part.
(XI) M.Sc. Geography: B.Sc with Geography as Optional Main Subject under Part III securing not less than 45% marks for that part or graduation in Geology securing not less than 50% of the aggregate marks under Part.III.
M.Com DEGREE
M.Com: B.Com with not less than 45% marks in Part III.
PROFESSIONAL POST GRADUATE COURSES
(xii) M.B.A. Degree (Business Administration): Graduation in any faculty with 50% of marks on an average in the aggregate.
(xiii) M.C.A. Degree (Master of Computer Application): B.Sc or B.Com with Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects with 60% marks (excluding languages).
(ix) M.L.I.Sc. (Master of Library and Information Science): B.L.I.Sc with not less than 50% marks of the Kerala University or a qualification recognised as equivalent thereto.
(xv) M.S.W. (Master of Social Work): All graduates in the Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Oriental Studies and Commerce with not less than 45% marks in Part III optional main subject (including subsidiaries).
(xvi) M.C.J. (Communication & Journalism): All graduates in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Oriental Studies, Commerce, Agriculture, Engineering, Medicine from the Kerala University or any other examination recognised as equivalent thereto. Candidates are selected on the basis of ranks obtained at an Entrance Test.
B.Ed.: Candidates should have secured a minimum 45% marks for the concerned subject under Part III of B.A/B.Sc. Degree Examination.
M.Ed: Candidates should have secured 40% in aggregate for B.Ed. with optional subject English - B.A Degree with English under Part III (45% marks) or B.A/B.Sc with 50% marks for Part I English and with aggregate of 35% marks are eligible for admission. O.B.C. candidates will be given 2% concession for Part III/ Part I English. Nativity of Kerala is required in the case of candidates from other states.
RESEARCH
M.Phil Degree: Eligibility for admission to M.Phil course is 55% marks at the Master's degree level subject to rules of relaxation for SC/STs.
GUIDELINES FOR ADMISSION OF FOREIGN STUDENTS IN THE DEPARTMENTS / COLLEGES AFFILIATED UNDER THE UNIVERSITY OF KERALA

1. Category of Students and Priority of Admission

Foreign Students may be divided into four categories for the purpose of admission.

1.1 Candidates sponsored by the Universities with which our University has signed specific MoU as part of Cultural Exchange Programme.
1.2 ICCR (Ministry of External Affairs, Government of. India) sponsored candidates
1.3 Candidates sponsored by their respective Governments.
1.4 Self-Financing candidates.
1.5 The order of priority for granting admission shall also be the same as above.

2. Eligibility for Admission

2.1 Non-Resident Indian Students (NRI Students) do not come under this category.
2.2 The candidates seeking admission shall have the required basic equivalent qualification from a University / Institution which is approved by the UGC or the Association of Commonwealth Universities or such other accredited Institutions of higher learning.
2.3 The candidates should have successfully completed (a) a minimum of twelve years of study for undergraduate courses. (b) a course of study in the first degree level or equivalent for post-graduate courses and (c) master’s level or equivalent course of study for M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes with a minimum of 50% marks.
2.4 The students who desire to join the Ph.D. programme shall be exempted from qualifying the NET/SET/Entrance test etc. conducted by the University. However, specific letter of recommendation from the Dean/Competent Authority to prove the research aptitude of the candidate shall be produced along with the application. Registration for such candidates shall be granted by the University based on the recommendation of the Doctoral Committee of the subject concerned. In case of students who have undergone multi disciplinary / inter disciplinary subjects at the undergraduate / postgraduate level admission to postgraduate / Ph.D programme may be granted subject to recommendation of the Chairman PG Board and Dean of faculty.
2.5 These students shall also be exempted from producing certificates pertaining to migration, matriculation, transfer and eligibility.
2.6 Application for admission should be endorsed in the prescribed format by the Head of the Department / Chairperson / Dean / Competent Authority of the Institution from which the candidate has obtained the basic degree. The University may, however, ascertain the veracity of the claim made by the candidate in this regard.
2.7 Candidates once admitted to a specific academic programme shall be subject to the rules and regulations governing the respective course of study formulated by the University from time to time.

3. Reservation of Seats

Two seats or 10% of the student intake of the Department concerned (rounded off to the nearest higher number) whichever is maximum, may be reserved in undergraduate/Post Graduate Programmes in the University / Affiliated Colleges including professional Colleges for Foreign students. This has to be over and above the sanctioned strength of the Department concerned. In the case of M.Phil and Ph.D. Programmes one seat each may be created as above.

4. Admission Committee for Foreign Students (ACFS)

4.1 An Admission Committee for the purpose shall be constituted with Pro-Vice-Chancellor as Chairman, Registrar, Co-ordinating Professor of the Exchange Programme, if any, Director of Student Services (Convener), one member of the Syndicate and two Deans, nominated by the Vice-Chancellor as members. The Dean of the Faculty concerned, if he is not already a member and the Head of the Department of the subject concerned shall also be included as special invitees while processing the application.
4.2 The Committee shall scrutinize the applications and make recommendations as to the admissibility or otherwise of the candidates. Based on this, a provisional admission memo will be issued by the University.
4.3 The Schedule of Admission shall be fixed by the University from time to time. It would be advisable if the admission is completed at least two months prior to the commencement of the academic year

5. Admission Procedure

5.1 Students shall obtain from the website the details of courses to be undergone and submit an application in the prescribed form along with copies of the qualifying certificates, mark lists and 4 copies of recent passport size photographs to the University within the time specified (Refer Appendix I: instructions to candidates).
5.2 The University Admission Committee shall scrutinize the applications and a PROVISIONAL ADMISSION MEMO will be issued to eligible applicants.
5.3 After obtaining the provisional admission memo the applicant should route his documents through the embassy / consulate to the University. At this stage Registration fee of US $100 should be paid to the KUF.
5.4 If in order, the University shall issue a PROVISIONAL ALLOTMENT MEMO directing the students to report to the college / department where he/she is expected to join for the course.

6. Fee Structure

6.1 An amount of US $ 10/ shall be charged as Scrutiny fee. The receipt of the same should be submitted along with the application form 
6.2 An amount of U.S. $ 100 shall be charged as Registration Fee from each candidate. This shall be remitted to the Kerala University Fund (KUF) and receipt submitted along with the completed application form for obtaining Provisional Allotment Memo. (Refer 5.3 and 5.4)
6.3 The rate of Tuition Fee is given in Appendix II. However, the rate of fee is subject to revision by the Syndicate from time to time.
6.4. In addition to this, examination fee and Special Fee at the existing rate shall also be charged from these students.


7. Office of the Director of Student Services (DSS)

7.1 There shall be a single window admission system and all procedures and formalities of admission shall be co-ordinated by the Director of Students Services.
7.2 This Office shall be the nodal unit for attending to the welfare and other requirements of these students including fulfilling registration formalities of Foreign Nationals; arranging necessary accommodation and other related matters such as initiation programmes, Socio-cultural activities etc.


8. Transitory Provision

8.1 The Vice-Chancellor shall, for a period of 2 years from the date of coming in to force of these guidelines, have the power to provide by order that these guidelines shall be applied to any programme with such modifications as may be necessary.

9. Academic Calendar

9.1 The time for admission will be the same as stipulated in the University academic calendar for various courses. Details of courses, date of commencement and completion, duration, etc will be available in the website.
9.2 The Examination schedule will be as notified in the website.

10. Rules for ICCR students

10.1 ICCR sponsored students should obtain term wise / semester wise progress report from the respective colleges / departments and submit to the ICCR office directly.

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CANDIDATE

Foreign students are admitted as Regular / Guest students in the University

Regular students

1. Students with the required basic equivalent qualification from a University/Institution which is approved by the UGC or the Association of Commonwealth Universities or such other accredited Institutions of higher leaning are eligible for admission in the University.
2. The candidates should have successfully completed (a) a minimum of twelve years of study for undergraduate courses (b) a course of study in the first degree level or equivalent for post graduate courses and (c) a master’s level or equivalent course of study for M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes with a minimum of 50% marks.
3. The students who desire to join the Ph.D Programme have to produce a letter of recommendation from the Dean/Competent Authority to prove the aptitude of the candidate in research.
4. Candidates whose application not recommended and endorsed by the Indian Diplomatic Mission will not be considered.
5. The certificates in languages other than English have to be translated into English and attested by the Indian Diplomatic Mission.
6. The following documents have to be produced along with the application:
(a) Copies of mark lists/certificates of examinations attested by Deans / Head of Departments / Competent Authority of the University/Board.
(b) Certificates of medical fitness from a recognized medical practitioner.
(c) Fee equivalent to US $ 100 towards registration fee to be paid to KUF.
7. In addition to tuition fee prescribed for each course (Appendix II) the students have to pay examination fee and special fee at the existing rate.
8. Candidates once admitted to a specific academic programme shall be subject to the rules and regulations governing the respective course of study formulate by the University from time to time.

Guest Students

The candidates who want to join as guest students shall indicate the subjects to be attended and the duration of classes required for each subject. The guest students will not be permitted to take the regular University Examinations or be issued any certificates other than Attendance Certificate, if required.
